Cubs is the Scouting section for 8 to 10½ year olds. We meet from 6:30-8pm every Monday.
At each Monday session Cubs:
Play games
Work together in teams
Lead their group in activities
Learn new skills
Find out new things about the world around them
For example, sessions might include
Start with "Grand Howl", a brief opening ceremony where Cubs remember their Promise
Take part in a game like dodgeball
Learn a new skill like putting up a tent
Take part in a team problem solving activity like building a tower of cups without touching them
Learn first aid skills
Light fires and cook marshmallows
Each week is a little bit different, and over the course of the 2-3 years Cubs work through all the elements of their Challenge badges, earning it before they move up to Scouts.
Camp is a key part of being a Cub. On Camp Cubs camp in tents or in buildings with the other Cubs, for example over a weekend.
In the past year camps have included activities like:
Building rafts
Indoor caving
Hikes
Cooking dinner over open fires
"Wide games" played outside over a large area
Archery
Axe throwing
In the evenings we'll normally have a campfire with songs and snacks before bed.
Everything we do at Scouts (including at Cubs) is risk assessed and managed to be as safe as possible for all participants. All of our leaders have up to date DBS checks and first aid qualifications. Camps are run by permitted leaders who have completed additional training. All this allows us Cubs to take part in adventurous activities while still staying safe and having fun.
